Overview
Parathyroid disorders affect the four small parathyroid glands located near the thyroid, which regulate calcium levels in the blood and bones. Both overactive and underactive parathyroid function can affect bone and kidney health, and are managed with regular monitoring and targeted treatment.
Symptoms
- Overactive glands (hyperparathyroidism): fatigue, bone pain, kidney stones, constipation
- Underactive glands (hypoparathyroidism): muscle cramps, tingling around the mouth and fingers, spasms
Causes & Risk Factors
Parathyroid disorders can result from a parathyroid adenoma (a benign growth), gland hyperplasia, or injury to the parathyroid glands during prior neck or thyroid surgery.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on serum calcium and PTH (parathyroid hormone) levels, along with vitamin D testing. Imaging such as a sestamibi scan may be used when surgery is being considered.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the type and severity of the disorder, and may include:
- Medical management and monitoring
- Correcting calcium and vitamin D levels
- Referral for surgical evaluation when indicated
Benefits Of Treatment At Our Clinic
- Coordinated monitoring of calcium, vitamin D and bone health together rather than in isolation
