Overview
Hyperthyroidism occurs when an overactive thyroid gland produces excess thyroid hormone, speeding up the body's metabolism. The most common cause is Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition. With the right combination of medication and monitoring, most patients achieve good long-term control.
Symptoms
- Unexplained weight loss
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Heat intolerance and sweating
- Hand tremors
- Anxiety or irritability
- Difficulty sleeping
Causes & Risk Factors
Hyperthyroidism can be caused by Graves' disease, toxic thyroid nodules, or thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid). It is more common in women and in those with a family history of thyroid or other autoimmune disease.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on TSH and free T3/T4 blood tests, along with thyroid antibody testing. A radioactive iodine uptake scan may be used when the underlying cause needs to be clarified further.
